Artist Statement
Lydia Johnston’s oil paintings are impressionistic, full of rich vibrant colors, and a beautiful sense of light.
"Color is my passion. My goal is to create a scene you want to step into. When you look at one of my paintings, I want you to sink into it and be transported. Color seduces me, the pale green tinged with red of a new maple leaf unfurling against the gray of a branch; the soft yellow of a daffodil against the deep blue of a cobalt vase. In my studio I search for just the right combinations of colors to captivate, to create movement at the same time as balance and harmony."
Lydia Johnston has lived and worked in southern Vermont for the past thirty years. Much of her inspiration comes from the passing seasons and the meadows surrounding her home. Her paintings are impressionistic. Her goal is to capture a fleeting moment in time, the sparkle of wildflowers in a meadow, the glow of a late day sunset; to create the sense of a place without providing all the details, drawing you back continually to find something new. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and hangs in many private collections.
