Informational statement

Cynthia Lewis Paperworks and Design was established as a sole-proprietorship in 2003. In November of 2004, after many delays, I purchased and moved my home and studio business to the newly renovated loft space at the Eclipse Mill in North Adams, Massachusetts. I have continued to add to my equipment which includes the all important two pound hollander beater, a twenty ton 20" x 30" press, large vats, an extensive drying system and many moulds and deckles. The largest sheet I can make in the traditional manner is 19" x 25". I can make up to 3' x 5' pieces and thick sheets of paper using my vacuum system.

The raw material is generally a mix of cotton rag and abaca; abaca is a strong fiber from the stalk of the banana plant and is imported mainly from the Philippines. I also use flax (linen), hemp, kozo and gampi and on occassion more esoteric fibers. The paper has a neutral ph and is completely archival. It is sized for writing and drawing and the amount of sizing can be varied on custom orders. The paper is easily hand fed throughink jet as well as laser printers and takes ink beautifully. Mainly the paper I produce is customized to the particular needs of a client.

I was introduced to the handmade paper process as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts College of Art, over twenty years ago. At that time, I was working in textiles, specifically as a weaver and I continue to weave both one-of-a-kind creative wall pieces and I make scarves and shawls on a limited production basis. Shortly after graduation, I worked with Elaine Koretsky and Donna Koretsky at the internationally renowned Carriage House Paper. That experience was absolutely invaluable; I stayed a short three years before going to graduate school where I developed my way of working with paper pulp on top of my woven surfaces-creating "a cast" from that textile. That happened in 1993 and it is a process I continue to explore, probably without end.

Please inquire about custom paper for stationery and papers for drawing, printing, watercolor and collage, as well as decorative sheets of paper for a variety of uses.
